The adult bed bug is 3/16-inch long, oval, flat and rust or mahogany in color. When the bed bug is unfed it is very thin and flat. When the bed bug is fed a blood meal it then becomes plump and red. Four-segmented antennae are attached to the head between the prominent compound eyes. A female bed bug lays her eggs one to five per day and 200-500 in her lifetime. The female bed bug uses a substance that is clear to attach her eggs on rough surfaces and in cracks. The eggs usually hatch in about seven days. Development from egg to adult is usually about 21 days. The adult bed bug can live up to a year.

During the day bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices. The bed bug will usually be found resting on wood and papersurfaces instead of stone and plaster. At night the bed bug will leave it's harborage area to feed on it's host which include birds, humans, and family pets. After feeding on it's host, the area which was bitten may itch and become inflamed. Many people have found bed bugs harboring in their beds and areas surrounding their beds. In time, these harborage areas become filled with feces, molted skins, and old egg shells of the bed bug.
